Le Chanéma est un projet de réhabilitation d’un ancien cinéma des années 1930 situé à Paimbœuf, en Loire-Atlantique. Ce lieu emblématique, aujourd’hui à l’abandon, a accueilli des générations de spectateurs et fut récemment redécouvert grâce au documentaire de Julie Rambaud « Le cinéma, Monique et moi ».

Autrefois appelé « Le Français », le cinéma fut fondé par René et Ernestine Crusson. Leur fille Monique, dernière gardienne des lieux, y a vécu entourée de ses nombreux chats, insufflant à l’endroit une atmosphère à la fois poétique, fantaisiste et profondément humaine.

Le nom « Le Chanéma » est un clin d’œil tendre à Monique et à ses compagnons félins, une manière d’honorer leur mémoire tout en célébrant la renaissance du lieu.

Le Chanéma is a rehabilitation project of a former 1930s cinema located in Paimbœuf, in the Loire-Atlantique region. This emblematic venue, now abandoned, welcomed generations of moviegoers and was recently rediscovered through Julie Rambaud’s documentary “Le cinéma, Monique et moi.”.

Formerly known as “Le Français,” the cinema was founded by René and Ernestine Crusson. Their daughter Monique, the last guardian of the place lived there surrounded by her many cats, giving the space a poetic, whimsical, and deeply human atmosphere.

The name “Le Chanéma” is a gentle nod to Monique and her feline companions, a way of honoring their memory while celebrating the rebirth of the place.

Composé d’une grande salle de spectacle avec un balcon, d’une large scène dotée d’une cage de scène, d’un espace bar convivial, de plusieurs salles d’exposition et d’un vaste jardin arboré ceint de vieilles murailles, le Chanéma est un lieu unique, chargé d’histoire et de potentiel.

Ce projet mobilise architectes, artisans, entrepreneurs, artistes et bénévoles… pour en faire un pôle de création, de rencontres et de dynamisme local.

Comprising a large auditorium with a balcony, a spacious stage equipped with a fly tower, a welcoming bar area, several exhibition rooms, and a vast tree-lined garden enclosed by old stone walls, Le Chanéma is a unique venue, rich in history and potential.

This project brings together architects, craftspeople, entrepreneurs, artists, and volunteers… to transform it into a hub for creation, connection, and local vitality.

Le Chanéma proposera une programmation artistique et sociale riche et plurielle, mêlant films classiques et d’auteur, courts-métrages, spectacles vivants, concerts variés et performances interdisciplinaires. Il pourra également accueillir et initier des festivals thématiques, venant rythmer la vie du lieu et du territoire tout au long de l’année.

Lieu de rencontres et de transmission, il accueillera également des résidences d’artistes, des ateliers de création et des projets participatifs, favorisant le dialogue entre les disciplines et les générations.

Le Chanéma will offer a rich and diverse artistic and social program, combining classic and art-house films, short films, live performances, a variety of concerts, and interdisciplinary performances. It will also host and initiate thematic festivals, helping to shape the rhythm of the venue and the local area throughout the year.

As a place for gathering and transmission, it will also welcome artist residencies, creative workshops, and participatory projects, fostering dialogue between disciplines and generations.

Aujourd’hui, l’association Les Amis du Chanéma veille sur ce patrimoine précieux et porte son projet de renaissance.

L’évacuation des détritus et des déchets a déjà été entièrement réalisée : le Chanéma est désormais prêt à entamer son grand lifting. De nombreux travaux vont transformer le bâtiment : désamiantage de la toiture, mise hors d’eau et hors d’air, réfection de la charpente en bois et en métal, reprise de la couverture, isolation des murs, pose de plaques de verre, peinture, rénovation des sols et des plinthes, ainsi que la réinstallation complète de la plomberie et de l’électricité.

Une nouvelle étape commence pour redonner vie au Chanéma et en faire à nouveau un lieu ouvert, vivant et partagé.

Today, the association Les Amis du Chanéma safeguards this precious heritage and leads its revival project.

The removal of debris and waste has already been fully completed: Le Chanéma is now ready to begin its major transformation. Extensive renovation work will reshape the building, including asbestos removal from the roof, weatherproofing (making the structure watertight and airtight), restoration of the wooden and metal framework, roof refurbishment, wall insulation, installation of glass panels, painting, renovation of floors and baseboards, as well as the complete reinstallation of plumbing and electrical systems.

A new chapter is beginning to bring Le Chanéma back to life and once again make it an open, vibrant, and shared space.
